Giving employees a voice.

Giving boards clarity.

HOW IT WORKS

1

Training and Implementation

We meet with staff and board members to introduce them to their Canary Advisor, and explain when and how to contact them. We also ensure that Canary is incorporated into the organization’s whistleblower or governance policies.

2

Raising Concerns

When employees notice a potential issue with a leader, they contact their Canary Advisor. Their advisor will help them clarify their concerns and ensure it reaches the board in a way that’s actionable and confidential.

3

Board Review and Action

Boards receive the employee’s concerns, along with guidance from Canary Advisors on interpreting the feedback and identifying next steps. This helps boards address issues proactively, make informed decisions, and take action to strengthen leadership and organizational health, all while keeping the process confidential and constructive.

FAQ

What does Canary do that HR can’t do?

HR plays an essential role in supporting employees and managing internal issues, but HR ultimately reports to leadership. This can make it difficult for employees to raise concerns about leaders themselves. Canary provides an independent, confidential channel for employees to share leadership concerns directly with the board. Our advisors help employees clarify their feedback and guide boards on how to respond appropriately to ensure accountability, transparency, and trust where internal systems can’t always reach.

Can board members contact employees who use Canary?

Board members do not contact employees directly. Confidentiality is essential to Canary’s process and to building trust. Canary acts as an independent intermediary: we receive and verify reports, summarize key information, and provide the board with enough insight to understand what’s happening without revealing who came forward unless the employee explicitly agrees. If a concern involves serious misconduct, legal risk, or safety issues, Canary facilitates next steps in a controlled way. That could mean asking the employee if they consent to be contacted by a third-party investigator or HR representative, or following up directly with the employee while allowing them to maintain anonymity.
